About Us

Michezo kwa Maendeleo (MiMa) is a registered non-governmental organization based in
Zanzibar that uses the power of sports and purposeful play to
create opportunities for girls, women, and youth.

Founded by Fatma Said Ahmed, MiMa builds confidence, leadership, and community resilience by integrating sports, education, and health into one powerful movement for change. Since our beginnings (previously known as Sustainable Development for Humanity Organization – SDHO), we have grown into a vibrant community platform where girls and women discover their voices, challenge barriers, and take the lead in shaping their futures.

We are a non-government organization established in Zanzibar, Tanzania to develop a generation of qualified female leaders through sports and leadership programs that train, coach, mentor, and inspire adolescent girls in and out of school and university students.

Our Vision

A Zanzibar where every girl and woman has the confidence, resources, and opportunities to thrive, on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.

Our Mission

To use sports as a catalyst for empowerment, education, and equality, building a movement that champions the leadership and wellbeing of girls and women in Zanzibar.

Our Impact

  • Empowered hundreds of girls and women through football camps, leadership clubs, and inclusive sports events.
  • Distributed and trained communities on sustainable menstrual products such as the Asan Cup, improving health and confidence for thousands.
  • Partnered with schools, sports councils, and global organizations to co-create the Girls’ Inclusion in Sports Agenda for Zanzibar.
  • Built strong alliances with both local and international partners—from UN agencies and universities to grassroots clubs and families.

What We Do

At MiMa, we believe sports are more than games—they are tools for empowerment, equality, and transformation. Our programs focus on three core pillars:

  • Sports Participation: Expanding opportunities for girls and women to play, compete, and excel in football, basketball, athletics, and other inclusive sports.
  • Leadership Development: Training Community Impact Coaches, young leaders, and women athletes to become changemakers in their schools and communities.
  • Community Engagement: Hosting festivals, outreach sessions, and awareness campaigns on issues such as menstrual health & hygiene, gender equality, and sexual & reproductive health rights (SRHR).

Our flagship initiative, the Play to Empower Curriculum, blends sports with life skills, leadership, and menstrual health education.
